Bad things happen and sometimes it may take a while to get over the pain and fear. It is possible to carry around emotional, physical and psychological traumas for years.
You have probably experienced episodes where you go off over something seemingly trivial. You dismiss the situation, telling yourself that it was just an over-reaction because you are tired or hungry or having a bad day.
It is not an over-reaction. Deep down you know that there is so much pain and anger and fear at the back of your mind. You are afraid to confront the feelings because it will rip open old wounds, which is overwhelming. So, you find it easier to sweep everything away from your conscious mind.
